The Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) is one of the most important metrics when evaluating a health insurance company. It represents the percentage of claims settled out of the total claims received in a given year. A higher CSR means the insurer settles more claims and is less likely to dispute your hospitalisation bill.

Data sourced from the insurance industry annual report 2024–25.

Context Matters

CSR alone doesn't tell the full story. Star Health (84.9%) and ICICI Lombard (84.5%) have CSRs below 85%, which places them in the 'approach with caution' category. Navi (71.4%) has a significantly below-average CSR and should be avoided for primary health coverage.

TruPath's CSR-Based Recommendation

100% Unbiased

Based purely on CSR, New India Assurance and Digit top the list. However, CSR alone doesn't determine the best health insurer — product quality, room rent restrictions, network hospitals, and co-payment clauses all matter equally. Our top recommendation, HDFC Ergo (CSR 96.7%), combines a very high CSR with excellent product features and a large hospital network — making it the best overall choice for most buyers.
